Venue

Umu Café, Coromandel Town
Join Clarke Gayford on Fish of the Day as he looks at the issues facing the Hauraki Gulf and the mahi being done by so many groups and marine species to save it. His journey starts at the Blue Springs at Putaruru and the orgins of the Wahou River. From stunning crystal clear springs to its mouth where, as one of New Zealand’s most polluted rivers, it pours into the Hauraki Gulf. Clarke looks at the work of Sustainable Coastlines in fringe planting to protect the river, AgriSea who are creating bio-stimulants from seaweed to replace the artificial fertilisers that are polluting the river and AgriSea’s Ulva sea lettuce project that is stripping the nitrogen and phosphorous out of the Waihou’s polluted water as well.   From here he journeys to Coromandel town to look at the oysters and mussels that too are working to clean the waters of the gulf as well as providing thousands of jobs in the process. With a kite of mussels in hand it’s then into Coromandel town’s Umu Café to cook up his catch.
