Wanaka

Wanaka is a resort town that sits as the Gateway to the Southern Alps and Mount Aspiring National Park: true Lord of the Rings country. It is best known for its skiing with two world-class ski fields at their doorstep as well and a myriad of heli-skiing opportunities. But we were there for the fishing and boy does this are produce some monster trout. Fishing for them is set against some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Like many regions of New Zealand, Wanaka too is an exceptional wine growing region and to complement their superb Pinot Noirs are a range of world class restaurants including the restaurant we worked with, Bistro Gentl and chef James Stapely.

Culture

Wanaka is a veritable treasure trove of adventure activities. Mountain biking, skydiving, hiking, jet boating, climbing and abseiling and the list goes on. Then there is the Mount Aspiring National Park – one of the countries most photographed alpine areas and criss-crossed with walks for all levels. Then there is Oxbow Adventures. From here you can do everything from heli tours to hunting world-class stags and of course fishing.

Fishing

We fished with Oxbow Adventures and their guide Gordy who is a masterclass when it comes to lifting your skill level and finding huge back country Brown Trout.
