Waiheke is one of FISH OF THE DAY’s favourite local destinations here in New Zealand, and it’s a great place to spend time.
If you’re into wine, great dining and of course fishing, this place is for you.
Some of the country’s best wines are produced here and there is accommodation to suit every budget and every requirement.
Not only is the island home to some of the best wines in New Zealand, but it is also home to what has been called one of the best oysters in the world = Te Maketu Bay Oysters.
You’ll find them at their own shop in Ostend, or head down to the Oyster Inn where they are shucked fresh each day.
Stonyridge Vineyard too has exceptional food along with an number of other very impressive restaurants.
Vines were first planted on the island as recently as the 1950’s. That said, its wines, as new as they are, rival some of the best in the world with Stonyridge’s Larose considered one of the top 100 wines in the world. Today wine tourism is one of the island’s main sources or income and where there is good wine you can be sure you will find equally good food.
While our trip to Waiheke was to fly fish for Kahawai with Matt from Saltflyfish, there are plenty of other operators ready to take you out in search of the Hauraki Gulf’s most prized eating fish, the snapper: but you have just got to try catching Kahawai on saltwater fly. These fish fight with a power of ten trout, they jump and they dive, so expect a real battle once you’re hooked up.
Wine Tours – best leave the car behind and either join a tour or bus it.
Wild on Waiheke – archery, skeet shooting and craft beer.
Art – there are so many options!
Ecozip – zip line over vineyards and into the bush.
Swim in one of the many stunning bays.
WORTH A MENTION
There are ferry sailings every hour from downtown Auckland, so day tripping too is easy.
Remember there is a car ferry too if you want to take your own car or rental over.
