Queensland, the second largest of Australia’s states, occupying nearly one-
fourth of the continent. The state is more than twice the size of the Texas and
seven times larger than the entire United Kingdom. Its coast is world renowned
for its white sand surf beaches and of course the Great Barrier Reef. It is the
perfect coast to grab a rental and self-drive and explore.
Culture
No shortage of shrimps for the BBQ up here, but the real history of this region
of Australia is that of the original inhabitants the Australian Aboriginals and the
Torres Islanders. The Aboriginal People of Australia are one of the oldest
populations of humans living outside of Africa and have inhabited Australia for
over 50,000 years. There are plenty of ancient sites around Queensland
where cave drawings can be seen, some thousands of years old.
Fishing
Fishing on the southern coast is hard with shore-based opportunities for
flathead and the highly prized Tailor. North and off the Great Barrier Reef is
the world’s best Black Marlin fishery with daily catches of granders in the peak
of the season.
